Albion Park Rail
The opening of the Illawarra railway in 1888 heralded a new era in the Shellharbour municipality. Not only was the new township of Albion Park Rail born, it also brought the district into focus with the railway commissioner declaring the South Coast a tourist district.
Albion Park Rail also houses the Illawarra Regional Airport. The Illawarra Regional Airport is the base for a growing Light Aeronautics Industry, which provides maintenance and engineering services for aircraft ranging from ultra light to medium size turbo prop and jet aircraft. Other activities from the airport include Skydiving, scenic flights, helicopter joy flights, microlight flights, biplane aerobatic flights and introductory learn how to fly lessons. The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) museum and workshop is located at the airport and is an internationally acclaimed tourist attraction and just one of the many tourist activities that the airport has to offer. The museum provides tours daily and also holds a open days on the second Friday, Saturday and Sunday of each month.
