Fun Facts: Things the south just does better

(Call it coincidence… we don’t think so)

Let’s be honest, people have a habit of heading north.

North for holidays. North for warmth. North because… well, that’s just what you do.

But what if we’ve all been overlooking something?

Because when you start looking a little closer, there’s a growing body of highly unofficial, mildly questionable, but very convincing evidence that…

The south just does things better.

1.  Penguins Picked the South (Enough Said)

You won’t find penguins heading north for the winter.

They chose the Southern Hemisphere.
They stayed.
They committed.

Cold water, wild coastlines, and a permanent tuxedo dress code.

If anyone understands lifestyle choices- it’s penguins.

2.  The South Has Its Own Light Show (Without the Hype)

Everyone talks about the Northern Lights.

Meanwhile, the Aurora Australis quietly does its thing in the south.

Same magic.
Fewer crowds.
More “if you know, you know” energy.

Very southern behaviour.

3.  The Southern Ocean Is Effortlessly Impressive

It’s the only ocean that circles the globe uninterrupted.

No land stopping it. No shortcuts. No fuss.

Just a powerful, flowing reminder that sometimes the best things don’t need to shout about it.

4. The Sky Looks Completely Different Down Here

Head south and even the night sky changes.

  • The Southern Cross replaces the North Star
  • New constellations appear
  • It all feels slightly unfamiliar—in the best way

It’s like travel… without needing a passport.

5.  Christmas Is Better in the South (We Said It)

Only in the Southern Hemisphere do you get:

  • Beach days instead of snowstorms
  • Long summer evenings
  • BBQs, seafood and sunshine

It just makes sense.

6.  The South Masters “Low-Key”

The south has a way of delivering incredible experiences without the chaos.

  • Less crowded
  • Less rushed
  • Less overhyped

But every bit as memorable—if not more

7.  Southern Wildlife Raises the Bar

Kangaroos. Wombats. Echidnas. Coastal whale migrations.

And yes… penguins again.

The Southern Hemisphere didn’t just show up—it overachieved.

8.  Whale Watching Happens Right Here

Each winter, whales make their way along Australia’s east coast.

Meaning along the south coast, you can:

  • Stand on a headland
  • Look out to sea
  • And watch a whale glide past

No queues. No glass. Just nature doing its thing.

9.  Even the Whales Agree — It’s Right Down South

And if you’re still not convinced…

Let’s talk about the Southern Right Whale.

Not only are they a regular sight along the south coast during migration season—putting on a show for anyone lucky enough to spot them—but they’re literally called:

  • Southern ✅
  • Right ✅

As in… the right whale. In the right place.

Originally named by whalers (we’ll skip that part), but today we choose to interpret it differently:

They’re proof.

They come south.
They show up in winter.
They do it every year.

Because it’s the right place to be.

10.  The South Has Serious Range

One of the best-kept secrets? Variety.

Head south and within a short drive you can move between:

  • Ocean
  • Lake
  • Rolling green hills
  • Rainforest

No long trips. No overplanning. Just options.

10.  Shellharbour Is Proof It’s Better South

And then there’s the part where it all comes together.

Just over an hour south of Sydney, Shellharbour delivers everything the “south advantage” promises:

  • Surfing at Killalea, even in winter
  • Coastal walks, snorkelling and diving at Bass Point
  • Waterfront dining and marina views at Shell Cove
  • Long, relaxed days along Lake Illawarra and Reddall Parade
  • Village charm in Shellharbour Village
  • Aviation history at Albion Park Rail
  • Green, open landscapes across Calderwood, Tullimbar and Croome

All with mild coastal weather, winter sunshine, and no need for a heavy coat.

The Takeaway

Penguins chose it.
The Southern Lights glow here.
And even the Southern Right Whale agrees.

Some things aren’t just different in the south…

They’re better.
